Volunteer Spotlight 25 Years of Community, Impact, and Heart

For 25 years, SCIO’s Ski & Snowboard Day has united supporters, volunteers, and participants on the slopes — building community, raising funds, and creating unforgettable moments. As we celebrate this milestone, we asked a few dedicated volunteers to reflect on what the event means to them and why they continue to give their time and energy to make it happen.

Here’s what Karen Vigmond and Barbara Ibbitson shared.

1. This year marks 25 incredible years of Ski & Snowboard Day. Looking back, what does this milestone mean to you personally?

Karen: It’s a reminder that a small group of people can do big things! Which is what SCIO is all about!

Barbara: Although I have only been involved in the committee for 2 years, associates from my company have been skiing and volunteering at the event for many years.  This milestone means to me that SCIO continues to provide opportunities for people who are unable to ski on 2 skies to try sit skiing.  It’s inspiring to see so many people try sit skiing and feel so good about their participation and accomplishment

2. Can you share a special memory or moment from the event that has stayed with you over the years?

Karen: The community feel of the event – everyone is so positive and happy to be there and support SCIO.

Barbara: Two years ago, I tried sit skiing.  As a member of the board, I did it to raise money for the event.  I was a skier before my surgery 22 years ago which left me an incomplete paraplegic. I had not skied since then.  It was terrifying and exhilarating all at the same time.  I was going down the hill with a 6 year old boy on a sit ski.  He was having a blast  I was pumped.  It made me realize how important the event is and why we keep it going

3. How have you seen the spirit of the community participants, volunteers, and supporters evolve since the early days?

Barbara: I think the enthusiasm has always been there but I think because we have made this our major fundraiser, there is an increased spirit to make sure we can provide this opportunity.

4. What motivates you to continue volunteering and helping make this event possible each year?

Karen: My love for SCIO and what this amazing organization does for those living with spinal cord injuries.

Barbara: I know what it’s like to live with a spinal cord injury even though I can walk and I want to make sure that everyone who wants to try sit skiing has an opportunity to do so.

5. If you could share one message with this year’s participants and donors, what would it be?

Karen: Thank you!! This event is not possible without their support. Here’s to the next 25 years!!

Barbara: Thank you to all our generous donors,  Without  you, this day would not happen. To our amazing participants and volunteers  – thank you for bringing so much heart and energy to Ski Day  Seeing you all come together is inspiring.  Have fun, enjoy every moment.

Thank you to Karen, Barbara, and all of our volunteers — past and present — for the time, effort, and heart you put into Ski & Snowboard Day. We can’t wait to celebrate with you on the slopes this year!
