Preventing & Managing UTIs with an SCI: An Online Q&A with a Nurse Practitioner

This page is sponsored by

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a common and ongoing concern for many people with spinal cord injuries — and knowing how to prevent them, recognize them early, and manage them appropriately can make a significant difference.

Join us for an online Peer Connection session with a Nurse Practitioner, who will answer questions and share practical, evidence-based guidance on UTI prevention and treatment.

Topics will include:

Preventing UTIs through hygiene and proper self-care when catheterizing

• Best practices for catheter use and care

• Hydration and fluid-intake guidelines

• Foods and beverages that may help or worsen urinary health

• Nutritional supplements such as cranberry extracts and D-mannose, dandelion root — what they may help with and their limitations

• Recognizing common and less obvious signs of UTIs

• Understanding asymptomatic bacteriuria and when treatment may

or may not be needed

• What a standing order is, how it works, and how to obtain one

• How to read lab reports, including urinalysis and culture & sensitivity results

• Common antibiotics used for UTIs and side effects to watch for

• Options and considerations for drug-resistant infections

• When to involve a urologist

• How to be an effective self-advocate and partner in your care

There will be time for participant questions, making this a practical and informative session for people at all stages of their SCI journey.

This  is a virtual event. Upon completion of registration a link will be provided for the workshop.
