A community champion joins SCIO to lead its next chapter of growth and impact
Toronto, ON — Wednesday, November 19, 2025 – Spinal Cord Injury Ontario (SCIO) and the Ontario Paraplegic Foundation (OPF) are proud to announce the appointment of Michael Richardson as its new Chief Executive Officer, effective November 24th, 2025.
A lifelong believer in the power of community, Michael has spent more than two decades helping people build lives of dignity, belonging, and opportunity. His career has taken him from the football field — as a former NFL and CFL player — to frontline leadership in social services at non-profit organizations across Canada, bringing a unique combination of optimism, determination, and hands-on experience to the role.
Most recently serving as CEO of United Way Winnipeg, and previously as Director of Child Welfare Operations for Ontario’s Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services, Michael has devoted his career to protecting and advocating for children, families, and communities, ensuring that people have the opportunity to live the lives they aspire to achieve.
“I am deeply honoured to be joining Spinal Cord Injury Ontario, an organization that has been a vital and transformative force in the community for 80 years,” said Michael. “I look forward to building on the incredible work of the dedicated staff and Board, and to advancing SCIO’s mission of empowering individuals with spinal cord injuries to live full and independent lives.”
Michael and his wife Jennifer — who is originally from Toronto — raised their five children in Winnipeg before returning to Ontario seven years ago. He brings with him a love of family, connection, as well as an infectious optimism.
“Michael is a compassionate and visionary leader with a proven ability to bring people together and drive lasting change,” said Dana Francoz, Chair of SCIO’s Board of Directors. “He brings an authentic belief in the strength of community and the ability to turn that belief into tangible progress. The Board is confident that Michael will guide SCIO forward with clarity, care, and purpose.”
SCIO also extends its gratitude to Sheila Casemore, who has served as Interim CEO since April 2025. Under her thoughtful leadership, SCIO remained strong and focused on delivering essential programs, advocacy and was able to make incredible progress while preparing for this next chapter.
As Michael begins his tenure, he is focused on listening, learning, and connecting with clients, families, partners, and staff across the province to shape SCIO’s next phase of growth and innovation.
