The influence of work disability policies on the return-to-work process of individuals with SCI in Canada
University of Ottawa
Unemployment is a significant and ongoing challenge for Canadians living with SCI. This may
be partly because of the country’s employment system and work disability policies.
However, we do not understand how the Canadian system and employment policies
influence the return-to-work process following SCI.
This study aims to understand how different types of employment disability policies and
their operationalization influence the experiences of Canadians with SCI during their RTW
process in two distinct times or stages: the time spent while unemployed and the time spent
while employed. Specifically, this study seeks to examine how these work policies function
in practice and to identify the facilitators and barriers within Canadian work disability
policies that impact the RTW process.
The knowledge from this research could provide valuable insights for improving the
employment support systems for individuals with SCI and allow for the application of more
inclusive and effective programs, strategies, and policies.
